Melatonin and ADHD

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Does your child with ADHD ever have problems sleeping? You’re not alone. Many people with ADHD have difficulty getting to bed at a reasonable hour and turning off their brain. Are there alternatives to medication? An article just published in the Feb 2007 Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry examines the roll of melatonin in ADHD children with “chronic sleep onset insomnia”. Children in the study were ages 6-12, taking either 3mg or 6mg of melatonin depending on body weight. Results showed that melatonin helped kids both fall asleep sooner and stay asleep longer. No more counting sheep - or waking up mom and dad!

Driving Safety and ADHD

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

ADHD has risks that reach beyond the classroom. Studies have shown that the impulsive and inattentive symptoms of ADHD can be a particular risk behind the wheel. People with ADHD are more likely to have motor vehicle accidents, speeding tickets, traffic citations, and experience loss of license. I often tell clients to remember there are “side effects” to not using ADHD medications such as greater risk of car accidents, a leading cause of death at a young age. Families and clinicians should together be weighing the risks of using medications with the risks of not using medications, and supportive counseling and education should always be a part of the treatment. A college sophmore with ADHD shares her experience on the dangers of driving without medication in this Washington Post article  http://washingtontimes.com/metro/20070219-110613-7319r.htm

It has been slow but finally psychology is addressing diversity and cultural differences and ADHD. Parents charged with child’s death by medication overdose

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

The tragic story of 4 year old Rebecca Riley here in Boston is heartbreaking. Her parents are now facing murder charges for her intentional overdose with depakote and clonidine, medications Rebecca was taking for Bipolar Disorder and ADHD. It demonstrates the extreme situations parents and clinicians can face in managing these very complicated disorders. The parent stress of dealing with mental illness in this situation lead to unthinkable behavior. Psychiatric conditions are life-threatening, by intentional and unintentional means, yet are often not given the same priority as physical medical conditions. Families need comprehensive care with close monitoring to insure they are getting all the necessary supports and the safe use of medication. Even with close follow up care there are risks, but at least our chances of identifying a problem are better with more contact.

Depressive symptoms higher among children with ADHD

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Interesting study in children associating ADHD, social competence, and higher rates of depressive symptoms.

Prior research with both community and clinical samples has documented that rates of depression are significantly higher in children with ADHD than in other children. This is concerning because children with ADHD and depression, in addition to experiencing greater distress in the present are likely to have greater difficulty over the course of their development. ABC Action News video on identifying ADHD

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

The myth is that we are overdiagnosing ADHD. It is true that without a proper evaluation, some children are mislabled as having ADHD who may have other reasons for their difficulty focusing. More commonly though we are underdiagnosing ADHD, particularly for those that have the inattentive, daydreamer type symptoms rather than hyperactive. 7.8% or 4.4 million children in the U.S. have ADHD. Correctly identifying ADHD is critical for their school success. See the attached ABC news video link regarding identifying symtpoms of ADHD. http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?section=local&id=4855551

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Study

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Pilot studies have indicated that omega-3 fatty acids can positively impact cognition and behavior. Australia’s Murdoch Children’s Research Institute is now launching a larger study to examine the benefits of omega-3’s in greater detail. 250 children with and without ADHD will be enrolled in the trial to compare learning, attention, memory, reaction time, and behavior in children taking omega-3 supplements versus those taking a placebo pill. It is wonderful to see the academic community’s interest expanding to research non-traditional approaches to care.

Video games and brain chemistry

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006
A recent  study of adolescents finds that violent video games stir up the brain’s motional-response center while reducing activity in regions linked to self-control. “After playing a violent video game, these adolescents had an increased activity in the amygdala, which is involved in emotional arousal,” Mathews said. “At the same time, they had decreases in activity in parts of the brain which are involved in self-control,” he added. The findings were to be presented Tuesday in Chicago at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. (more…)
